Optima vs EnergyPlus, RETScreen & Excel

They are all good tools, for different jobs. The real question is: which job do you need done?

The right tool for the right job

Use EnergyPlus, HAP or TRACE…

to design a new system, size equipment or run code compliance. They are excellent engineering tools, but building a full building model just to justify a unit replacement takes days.

Use RETScreen…

to screen clean-energy projects at large (solar, wind, efficiency). Its strength is breadth, not depth: on the HVAC side it works with monthly averages rather than hourly equipment simulation.

Use Excel…

for a quick back-of-the-envelope estimate. But without hourly weather, COP curves or consistency between reps, a spreadsheet remains an approximation that is hard to defend in front of a client.

Use Optima…

when the question is economic: replacing a gas RTU with a heat pump, retrofitting an aging system, comparing two candidates. Hour-by-hour simulation, real tariffs, professional report, in about 5 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Does Optima replace EnergyPlus or HAP?
No, they are complementary tools. EnergyPlus, HAP and TRACE are for designing and sizing systems; Optima is for economically justifying an equipment replacement. Many firms use both: design in their engineering tool, the client-facing business case in Optima.
Why not just use RETScreen, which is free?
RETScreen is excellent for screening clean-energy projects, but it works with monthly averages. In an HVAC replacement, profitability is decided in the cold hours, where a heat pump's COP drops and defrost kicks in. An hour-by-hour simulation with real equipment curves yields a far more defensible payback.
What can't Excel do in a replacement analysis?
Technically everything is possible in Excel, at the cost of hours per project and results that vary with whoever built the sheet. In practice, almost no spreadsheet integrates 8,760 hours of real weather, temperature-dependent COP curves and tariffs extracted from bills. That is exactly the calculation Optima automates in 5 minutes.
